When clients ask me about their hair, the topic of hair appearance always comes up first and the issue of hair health is usually brought into conversation by me. I happened to know that healthy hair means beautiful hair and it goes in that exact order, not the other way around. Think of it as maintaining oral hygiene; unhealthy teeth are not very attractive, not in the US anyway. To make your hair always look best let’s learn how to take care of what nature gave you. Too often people mistreat their locks and diminish their natural appearance. And by the way, just throwing money at a problem doesn’t mean that it will go away, so when you are buying hair products, please be selective and only use something that will promote your hair health, not just mask the problems. Hair product selection comes down to picking a product designed for your type of hair. For example, if you happen to have curly hair you want to find something that would complement your curls.

Here I am going to share with you some of the useful tips on how you can manage and revitalize your hair. These methods are proven to work and most importantly they promote hair health.

Excess Shampoo Makes Your Hair Dull

Let’s say you are living an active lifestyle and you exercise and do a lot of things outdoors. In this case you have two choices. One is to avoid washing your hair every day. And another if you must wash your hair daily is to pick a mild natural shampoo and use it in a following manner. When applying shampoo, use small amounts, too much shampoo and rinse-in-a-hurry approach will leave residue which is both unattractive and damaging to your hair. Use plenty of water to rinse the shampoo off well. Shampoo is a cleaner, not a conditioner. Avoid using shampoos that contain sulfate compounds, especially if you wash your hair often, these over time will contribute to hair, and scalp damage as well as fade your color. A great hair protector and defender against damage is a natural oil treatment which I will cover later.

Conditioners and Hair Shine

I don’t like to sound like a parrot but make sure that conditioner you use is designed for YOUR HAIR TYPE. If it’s not you are unlikely to achieve professional results. Avoid using bottom-price conditioners, they use cheap and harmful chemicals which eventually will create a buildup on your hair and may result in dandruff which will lead you to using another chemically saturated product and further hair damage.

How To Apply Conditioner

Apply conditioner first on your hand, not your hair and gently massage it into your wet hair. If you have short hair make sure you are using just a bit, if you have long and thick hair, start from the scalp and applying small amounts separately proceed down to you hair ends paying extra attention to the ends. You also may use a wide tooth calm while in a shower to distribute conditioner. More conditioner doesn’t guarantee better results, use small amounts each time you apply and make sure you evenly cover your entire hair. Yes, it will take you a couple of minutes extra but it makes a big difference. Good conditioner also protects your hair. The key here is GENTLY massaging conditioner into your hair EVENLY. Please make sure that you rinse it out well, most conditioners are designed to be rinsed out, otherwise they will leave your hair dull and flat. Conditioners help to manage hair.

Use Silicon Flat Iron To Straighten Your Hair

“There is nothing that a glass of wine and a flat iron can’t fix.”

Flat irons are very popular these days and there are so many to choose from but I recommend using a straightening iron with silicon plates – these are much easier on your hair. Since flat irons apply heat to your hair they may cause damage but silicon-plated irons allow hair to slide through easier which reduces damage. As a result you will have more control over the iron and reduce heat exposure. Silicon plates are far better than metal and ceramic plates. Please test drive your new flat iron unplugged to get a better feel and then you will be prepared to handle it like a pro. Professional hairstylists use them all the time because of the minimal damage to your hair and they are good time savers. Soft silicon plates distribute heat evenly and are more gentle on your hair. If you are using a flat iron to style your hair get a silicon-plated, I am sure you will like it.

Working with Eucalyptus and Peppermint Hair Shampoos

These products contain natural hair cleansing and rejuvenating elements and besides wonderful natural fragrance they help to revitalize your locks. If you are willing to try buy a small bottle to see how your hair and scalp will respond to these products. You don’t want to use them every time you wash your hair. These are specialized products for scalp issues.

Keratin Magic

So, what is this keratin? Keratin is a natural protein and the truth is that hairs crave protein. Unlike chemical-based hair protein enrichment products keratin is a natural product which creates a non-damaging external layer which protects your hair against sun, harsh environment as well as soothes your scalp and hair and enhances appearance. Keratin based products especially beneficial for people with active lifestyle. Not too long ago a new, keratin-based hair revitalizing treatment entered the market. Since it proven to be quite effective many manufacturers have jumped on a band wagon and developed a plethora of keratin hair goodies and some of them include complex treatments. There is no need to undergo one if you just want your hair to look good, but if your hair is damaged you probably want the whole enchilada. Most commonly keratin products are used in battling frizz. Just like with most hair products I would advise you talking to your hairstylist on what keratin solutions will suit you best.

Hot Oil Hair Treatments

Is your hair dry? If that is so, please consider a hot oil hair treatment. It is very beneficial to your hair and scalp and usually is applied weekly. Again, there are plenty of various products on the market and at this point I am not going to endorse any of them, I just want you to agree with manufacturer’s application instructions. Generally, it is recommended that you gently massage oil into your hair and scalp and after cover your head with a plastic bag and put a warm towel to allow oil to do its magic. This will help to infuse oil into the hair follicle and after ten or fifteen minutes rinse your hair well with warm water. This will make your hair fuller softer, shinier and more manageable and the best thing is you don’t need a deep fryer to do this.

Conclusion

These are the tips that will help you to keep your hair healthy and manageable. Since all these treatments are safe you are welcome to embark on some experimentation to learn what works best for your locks and looks. Results will vary based on your selection, application techniques, and consistency as well as on the degree of hair damage but if you are my client you know by now that I would never recommend you something that would result in hair damage.

Here is to hair shine and vitality,

Most of my clients come from referrals. Yes, there are a few walk-ins but considering the location of my hair salon I get only a few from the Star bookstore nearby. And yet, we are always busy. My hair stylists are booked for weeks in advance. Sometimes I think that we are that the easiest bunch of hairstylists not only in San Diego but also in Southern California.

Many people who were referred by the family or friends came to hair salon Tamales because they were looking for solutions to their existing care problems. Some of them include of working with inexperienced hairstylist, some, as I have learned in many cases, end up doing dreadful things to their hair themselves. The wrong choice of hair products, the wrong hairstyle that doesn’t compliment you, a wrong hair color, all of these quickly diminish the quality of your appearance and when your appearance suffers consequences may follow. Your looks are important in your career and personal live and that makes your hair stylist an important person in your life. So, how do you find one?

How do you find the hairstylist in San Diego you can trust? Yes, I could give you just a shameless self promotional plug and tell you to come and see us. I’m not going to do that, chances are one of your friends will suggest it sooner or later. Besides, if you live in East County or in Oceanside and if you are a busy person you may consider finding someone closer. Having said that, I have clients driving from Los Angeles to see me, I’m not kidding.
Here is how you will find your perfect hairstylist in San Diego:
You can begin your search by asking your friends, especially the ones whose hair you like. Ask them about their hair stylist and for how long they have been seeing him or her. See, most hairstylists specialize in styling particular types of hair and haircuts. Some could be very good that styling Mohawks and some are masters of bridal hair. That’s why it is important to find the hairstylist who specializing in your particular type of hair. Most hairstylists are versatile but, still there is a niche of what they do best.

Schedule a consultation and your perspective hairstylist(s) about the type of training they had and whether they are keeping up with new trends, new hair styling techniques and new hair products. Ask them if they are willing to experiment a little as well as listening to you. You want a hairstylist who without being argumentative will help you to pick the perfect hairstyle complimenting your complexion. Also find out how much they charge, but believe you me, in most cases you do not want to look for the least expensive. Quality of work usually reflects the price and by being both considerate to your budget and the looks you would like to have, you will find a perfect balance, I am sure.

Get four or five difference hairstylists you would like to see if and make appointments. When you do that consider their proximity, if you live in La Jolla, you may want to see if your hairstylist in Carlsbad but Temecula would be a little inconvenient. I know it sounds like a drag to see five different hairstylists, but it’s worth it. You are building a long term relationship with your hairstylist. You can schedule a consultation with your prospects and when you arrive at the hair salon taken take mental notes of how clean they are, how professionally they behave and what types of products they carry. Talk for a few minutes to each and every hairstylist you see. Ask them what they think about your hair condition and what hair products they are willing to recommend and why.

Ask them what do they think about your current hairstyle then what would they suggest improving your looks? Listen to their answers and look at their work. Do you think this person cares enough about your hair and your satisfaction? If your internal instincts say “yes”, it’s a plus.
After all said and done make your pick and stick with the one you like the most. Do not change your hair stylists often, besides if you will find a perfect hair master you probably would not want to experiment with someone else.

Let me share with you what I think about my team which I consider to be the best San Diego hairstylist team. Hairstylists at Tamales hair salon are true masters of hair. I am proud of each and everyone. We gain our clients trust by making them look their best each and every time they see us. After all, they trust us with their most perceptible asset, their hair. This trust creates a bond between a client and the hairstylist, a bond so strong that many things confessed by the client would not be shared with anyone else. That’s why I recommend to everyone spending a little time with prospective hair stylists before you decide who is going to be your final pick.

Good luck and may your hair being taken care of by the true master of hair. It makes your life easier and more fun,

I have worked with many hairstylists for over twenty years and from my experience I have to say that it is very important to hire the right people to compliment your hair salon operation. The quality of your team will determine success and longevity of your hair styling empire.

A good hairstylist is not that easy to find. Besides the expert knowledge in hairstyling you want a reliable, punctual, honest and a people person serving clients in your hair salon. You want someone who likes working with people and whose personality help your salon to attract more clients.

I have seen hairstylists with a lack of inspiration who do not like to be bothered with such things as a continues improvement of their skills, failed to come on time, disrespect their clients and even try to take someone else’s clients. If you faced with such problem, solve it and solve it fast.

In any rate, I am glad to report that in my San Diego hair salon I do not have such issues. Why? I have learned how to hire people and that helped me to establish an environment that allowed me keeping my hairstylists employed for decades and to achieve the highest rate of satisfaction from my clients in the entire San Diego hair salon scene.

When it comes to interviewing a new candidate to join your salon, I am following these steps and I hope you will find these helpful:

First, talk with a person over the phone. This will help you to save while interviewing potential candidates. If you have a popular hair salon you will have quite a few candidates wanting to join you. Telephone interview will allow you to select the best candidates for the second round of personal interview. Ask general questions about their qualifications, experience and specialties. Ask why they left their previous salon. Listen not just to what they are saying but how they talk. This will help you to make a decision whether you want to see this person for the second round of interviewing.

Your face-to-face interview will take about 30-40minutes, even if you are in love with the person; give yourself time to ask the right questions.

What is their experience? Here you really can learn how knowledgeable they are about hairstyling.

What did they learn lately? This will help you to know if they really like their job or just making a living.

Who did they work for? This will help you to establish a qualification of this person. If they worked for a known, busy hair salon, that is certainly a plus.

Why did they leave their previous salon? Listen carefully, this could tell you a lot about a person and possibly indicate potential problems.

Who are their references? Get a few clients and previous boss’s references. Sometimes, your candidate may have disagreement with their previous employer, if that is the case, I would get to the bottom of it. Trust me, employers are not always right, and I happened to be one.

Are they punctual? This is very important, if you have a busy salon, you better have organized people, otherwise you will have a whole bunch of irritated people in your hair salon and that will not help your business or the friendly atmosphere.

What hair products do they prefer using? I always pay attention to that. People who use hair products that contain harmful chemicals for the sake of temporary effect care very little about their client’s hair heath and that tells me a lot about a hair stylist.

Can they work extra time if needed? You need a team player, someone who can cover and back you up if need be. Do not allow selfish and arrogant people in your salon, no matter how experienced they are in hairstyling. You will have more problems than you can handle.

How do they get along with people? See how a person responds; ask them to tell you a couple of funny or unusual stories from their personal hairstyling experience.

When you speak with a candidate, see how they respond to your questions and how likeable they are. Don’t be afraid to throw in a couple of hardball questions and see how a hairstylist reacts.

Learn about their knowledge of hygiene and cleanliness. Do they follow all the regulations?

When asking questions about hairstyling experience, find out how versatile and proficient they are in hair cutting, hair coloring, perms, hair styling. Can they work with men, women, children? Do they know how to suggest hairstyles for different age groups? Your goal is to find a hairstylist who is versatile and experienced.

Find out if your candidate can sell hair products and how he or she sells them. Can they explain the benefits of the products you carry? Do they care for client’s best interests? Can they help you client’s retention?

Have a trial cut in your shop with a volunteer client or a model and observe their work. Make it a simple hair job and take mental notes on how hairstylist performs the techniques and handles the client.

If you follow these steps you are likely to hire a great addition to your hair salon. I have a great team of top-notch San Diego hairstylists. I am proud to have them in my hair salon.
